When I was first starting out in my career I was optimistic, excited and starry eyed about the future and the opportunities that might come my way. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect, but the one thing I didn’t expect was instant success. I knew that I would have to work hard, do lots of free test shoots and jobs and learn the difference between the makeup that I was doing in the salon as opposed to the makeup that needed to be done for the camera. At first I spent a huge amount of time refining my skills and critiquing my work rather than focusing mostly on marketing or expecting to get bookings. But, I knew that this unpopular strategy would pay off… Once I was ready to market myself more aggressively my skills would be solid.
By current standards this may not sound super appealing but no matter what line of work you are in there is no substitute, no shortcut no way around doing the work…. And very few people get “lucky” enough to have an instant career, or at least one that lasts.
I have found when you strive each day to make your work better than it was the day before (full on pedal to the metal or nose to the grindstone) something magical begins to happen…
One of my favorite quotes that I hope inspires you today
“Luck is a crossroad where opportunity and preparation meet “- Seneca
